Five religious beliefs are predominant in the Yunnan Province: Confucianism, Daoism, Buddhism, Islam and Christianity.  Most of these religions coexist or mixed over the years with more ancient but still thriving beliefs like Animisim, Bon or ancestor worship.

By and large, the Chinese people see no reason to quarrel over religion and are receptive to both home grown and imported beliefs. They are able to blend different religions and even worship two or religions simultaneously.

Before important exams, the same students can often be seen burning incense in Confucian temples, Buddhist monasteries and in front of Daoist shrines. Like in other parts of the world, for some people, religion plays an important role in their while others do not.
